Living “up north” has been a dream of mine for many years. I grew up in Lansing (Michigan), where trees and lakes are not a part of the landscape, but, as a child, I had many many family summer vacations in the U.P. and camping trips with the Girl Scouts — all of which made woods and water essential components of my definitions of relaxation and peace. It’s probably not surprising that I’m an earth sign (taurus) either.
So, after 50+ years of city living, I built my own tree house in northern Michigan. It’s in the woods, but it’s also a “tree house” of the right kind: a log cabin! And my writing space is in the loft… so I’m at the same height as the tops of many of my wonderful pines. The perfect place to think, read, write, and write some more.
As I noted in my About Me description, I’ve had a long-time fascination with journals and diaries. I find the public vs private voice of the writer to be an intriguing contradiction (we write diaries to keep private records of our lives; however, there’s always that awareness of external readers). Blogs are so much more public, but there’s still that semi-private voice.
So, those are the foundations of my blog… extending, too, into my new life living full time in Northern Michigan. I guess I’ll find out if this focus actually works!
